Hosting FAQ
What is Web Hosting?
Web hosting is the act of renting space and bandwidth through a
company so that you may publish your web site online.
You can either opt for free hosting that is usually supported with
banners and pop ups, or may opt to get paid web hosting, which gives
you complete control over your site contents.
What is a Domain Name?
A domain name is a word along with a TLD that uniquely identifies
your website.
What is Domain Parking?
Domain parking lets you buy a domain and then have a 'coming soon'
page on it. This is not needed - if a domain is not parked it will simply be iinaccessible to anyone.
Most domain registrars provide this by default.
What is the difference between UNIX hosting and Windows hosting?
Depending on which operating system to go with depends on your needs.
If you need to support Microsoft products such as ASP, MS Access, or VBScript, then Windows hosting would be better. Furthermore, if you are comfortable with IIS and do not have the time to understand how UNIX works, Windows hosting would again be a better choice.
There are some things to remember.
First of all, just because you use Windows at home does not mean you should use Windows hosting. The two are completely different, and having a Windows system at home will not affect your ability to communicate with a UNIX server.
Secondly, Linux is much more common with web hosts due to its superior stability and because it is free. Since it is free, Linux hosting is usually cheaper than Windows. Just because it's free does not mean it's not as good - Linux is an excellent product too.
In order to help you, we have created a list of web hosts using Unix and a list of web hosts that use Windows.
Will I have unlimited access to FTP?
You can create a certain number of FTP user accounts in your control panel (depends on the plan). This FTP user will get his very own access information. Because of this great feature you could offer small hosting services to mini websites that do not need their own domain name. Once you order a shared hosting account, simply login to your control panel and start creating FTP users.
Do you offer MySQL?
Yes, we offer MySQL in all of our Linux Hosting Plans.
How much data transfer will I need for my web pages?
You can figure out how much page data transfer you will require by estimating your average page size (including graphics!) and multiplying it by the number of page views you expect to have in a month. For example with an average page size of 50 KB, and around 200 page views per day, you will transfer an average of 300 MB per month. In this case, you should get a plan one step higher than with 300 MB of data transfer limit per month, so you don't have to worry about overstepping your account's limit.
What are PHP, ASP, perl, etc?
These are all programming languages which are referred to by their acronyms.
PHP - Hypertext Preprocessor
ASP - Active Server Pages
Perl -not an acronym
Each programming language has its own benefits and uses. It is best that you research on your own to find one that best fits your needs.
What are subdomains?
Consider subdomains as an extension of your domain. For example, your site is www.example.com. A subdomain would be test.example.com, and another would be webhosting.example.com.Subdomains are usually treated as separate sites from the main domain site.
Do I have to change my domain if I get a new host?
No. Provided that the domain is registered in your name (as it should be), you can simply update your namservers (from where you manage your domain names) to that of your new host.
What is FTP?
FTP is short for 'File Transfer Protocol'. It is the protocol that lets you upload files to your web host.
Why am I getting the 403 Forbidden page error?
The web server thinks that the HTTP data stream sent by your web browser was correct, but access to the page / resource identified by the URL is forbidden for some reason. Most common reason for error message is that the directory on your site that you're trying to visit is missing a index.html or index.php page.
This indicates a fundamental access problem, which may be difficult to resolve because the HTTP protocol allows the web server to give this response without providing any reason at all. So the 403 error is equivalent to a blanket 'NO' by your web server - with no further discussion allowed.
Resolving 403 errors - general
You first need to confirm if you have encountered a "No index.html or index.php" problem. You can see this if the URL ends in a slash '/' rather than the name of a specific Web page (e.g. .htm or .html). If this is your problem, then you have no option but to access individual Web pages for that Web site directly or create or rename your page to index.html or index.php
It is possible that there should be some content in the directory, but there is none there yet. For example if your ISP offers a 'Home Page' then you need to provide some content - usually HTML files - for the Home Page directory that your ISP assigns to you. Until the content is there, anyone trying to access your Home Page could encounter a 403 error. The solution is to upload the missing content - directly yourself or by providing it to your ISP. Once the content is in the directory, it also needs to be authorised for public access via the Internet. Your ISP should do this as a matter of course - if they do not, then they have missed a no-brainer step.
If your entire Web site is actually secured in some way (is not open at all to casual Internet users), then an 401 - Not authorized message could be expected. It is possible, but unlikely, that your Web server issues an 403 message instead.
Some Web servers may also issue an 403 error if they at one time hosted your site, but now no longer do so and can not or will not provide a redirection to a new URL. In this case it is not unusual for the 403 error to be returned instead of a more helpful error. So if you have recently changed any aspect of your Web site setup (e.g. switched ISPs), then a 403 message is a possibility. Obviously this message should disappear in time - typically within a week or two - as the Internet catches up with whatever change you have made.
If this type of browser check indicates no authority problems, then it is possible that your Web server (or surrounding systems) have been configured to disallow certain patterns of HTTP traffic. In other words, HTTP communication from a well-known Web browser is allowed, but automated communication from other systems is rejected with an 403 error code. This is unusual, but may indicate a very defensive security policy around your Web server.
Why could I need a dedicated IP?
For most people, a dedicated IP is not required. But for people that want to provide anonymous FTP or a website using SSL, a dedicated IP can make that easier.
How often can I update my site?
There are no limits on how often you can update your site, in fact, it is a good idea to update at least once a month by adding newinformation, removing old or outdated info and making sure that everything is current.
This will not only improve your search engine position, but it will also ensure that first time visitors are never turned-off by old or incorrect information.
What is PayPal?
Simply put, PayPal lets anyone with an email address send money to anyone else with an email address.
Each user signs up with PayPal and then enters their necessary banking and credit card information. Once registration is completed, your email address is all you need to send and receive money.
What is period of time?
period of time is literally what it means, it is the amount of time your site is online throughout the entire month.
The best uptime would be 100%, but because things can break, many hosts offer 99% uptime guarantees. This means that if your site is not accessible for more than 43 minutes in a single month, they will reimburse you, depending on their terms of service.
What is fullservice web hosting?
Full-service can refer to a number of services offered in addition to providing web space, transfer, and emails for a web site. For example it could be 24/7 toll free phone support, web design services, or web site content maintenance services.
How can I pay for web hosting?
What methods of payment are accepted depends on each individual host.mostly everybody accepts credit cards such as Visa and MasterCard. huge majority of plans need periodic (usually monthly up to yearly) payments.
Why I don't want to go with the cheapest hosting
A host has to made a profit to continue operating. Some hosts can't properly understand the market and may be pricing themselves also cheap.
What can I do to put Flash on my website?
Flash is a client side feature ,it will be run on the user's computer not on your web host. so, the user's browser has the correct plugin installed, it will run on their computer.
What is virtual web hosting?
Also known as virtual hosting or shared hosting, virtual web hosting should be what 99% of people need.
Most people have websites that are not very demanding. In such a case, it would be wasteful to rent an entire server. In bad situations, another person on the same server as you may use up too many resources, resulting in your own site becoming inaccessible.
How much does a domain name registration name cost?
The prices vary depending on the plan you select.
Could I access my domain name with or without the "www."?
Yes, you will able to access the domain name with or without the "www." in front. For example, you can access the domain name "tryangled.com" by going to "www.tryangled.com" as well as "tryangled.com"
I am using too much bandwidth. Is there anyway for me to make it less?
You should first try to optimize the graphics on your website. Many GIFs look just as good with fewer colors, and many JPEGs look just as good with a higher compression level. NetMechanic offers an image optimizer program online.
Make sure you use relative paths, so that images are not downloaded more than one time. Remove any extra spacing and when linking to other pages, use relative paths and not absolute links.Best of all, optimizing your page like this makes the user experience better as your site will load faster for them!
